Why not a subscription?

An opening repertoire is something you learn once and maintain. Charging rent for it would push us to stretch the learning out, which is the opposite of the job.

Is the free tier crippled?

No. Two openings, every stage, real spaced repetition. If you only ever play one opening with each colour, the free tier is genuinely enough.

Do I need an account to try it?

No. Every opening page is playable without signing up. An account only exists to remember what you have learned.
